If you are age group 21-30 and loves water activities, I suggest  Pacific Beach.  If you are 30-40  and a young professional and like the upscale nightlife, I suggest Downtown, Bankers Hill, Hillcrest, North Park, Mission Valley, La Jolla, UTC area. I'm a Realtor so you can ask me anytime.

San Diego is safe in general. You should try out North Park or University Heights. Both neighborhoods are undergoing a major renaissance right now. They're cute, fun and unforgivably hip.

I'd say that Northpark, Hillcrest and Uni/Normal Heights are the best bets for an SF transplant.  When I was living in SD, I would always end up hanging out in those neighborhoods, even though I lived in north county.  PB is good for the beach and nightlife, but it means that you would have to commute to anywhere that you would be working.  Burby areas like Mira Mesa and Clairemont are cheap and safe, but a bit on the boring side, and La Jolla/UTC is posh and sterile.

What industry are you in?  Jobs are clustered by area mostly.  Biotech and IT are nestled up in the Torrey Pines and Sorrento Valley areas, financial/banking you can find around Mission Valley and Downtown, healthcare around Hillcrest or La Jolla, and Qualcomm is everywhere.

Preferrably, I like to stay anywhere around the 8 freeway. 1.) it gives you easy access to all the places you want/need to go to and 2.) it's generally safe (as much of san diego is)

La jolla and Hillcrest are the most appealing places to live in.  The first one is a tranquil area with a beautiful coast and sophisticated shops.  The second one is a progressive and urban melting pot where casualness and eccentricity converge.

Can't go wrong with craigslist to start your job search. I'd recommend you decide on a neighborhood after you find a job, as commuting can be a bitch here. The public transpo is nowhere near as useful as it is in SF, and the city is pretty spread out.

Agreed that there are very few areas to be considered 'dangerous', so it comes down to vibe and convenience. At least you won't have sticker shock since you're coming from another expensive city.

The beaches:
PB/Mission Beach- extension of a frat house kegger
OB-hippies, vegetarians, stoners and runaways
La Jolla-expensive, exclusive, and expensive

Downtown:
Gaslamp, Little Italy, Center City, Banker's Hill- tons of new lofts and high rise condos. Dance clubs with long lines and absurd cover charges. Restaurants and shopping. Young, Urban, Professionals.

Golden Hill, South Park, North Park-
Less urban than downtown, but by no means 'the suburbs'. All have strong community identity. Plenty of bars, restaurants and shopping. Not ritzy, mostly older homes. The young, hip & artsy live side by side with working class families and older residents who've been there forever.

Hillcrest/Mission Hills - Again, more urban than suburban. Lively restaurant, club and shopping district. Strong gay presence. A bit more upscale lately than North/South Park and Golden Hill. Cosmopolitan, sophisticated, artsy and hip.

Central-
Clairemont, Linda Vista, Bay Park, Mira Mesa-cheaper than the beach, still close by. Suburban tract homes, schools. Quiet, convenient.

East County-
College- Near SDSU, older neighborhoods with lots of college students around. Taco shops, record shops and head shops.

Santee, La Mesa, El Cajon, Spring Valley, etc- cheap, it get's hotter out there than near the coast. You'll have at least a 20 minute drive to go anywhere  in San Diego proper. Strip malls, suburbia. I imagine this is what most of America is like.

Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Penasquitos, Scripps Ranch, Carmel Mountain- See East county, but add at least 25% to the average household income. Soccer moms abound!

That being said, I can't wait to move...this SF Foggy weather is really getting to me and I'm dying to move south!  Although by the time I get down there, it's the middle of the winter...how far is Big Bear from SD anyway?  I'm going snowboarding!!!

Big Bear is about 2 to 2.5 hours away. Go 15, 215, 10, and go in from the back way. The normal recommended way has crazy traffic. If you go in from i think "37" it has less traffic, slightly longer of a drive, but its worth not sitting there.

oh yeah, SDPD releases their crime reports every year. you can go to that website and poke around. each person defines "safe" a little bit differently. there are definately neighborhoods that are hotspots for stolen cars, and each neighborhood offers different type of housing options. some have lots of apartment complexes that require you parking on the street or outside, some have major parking issues, etc. (SD has a high crime rate in terms of stolen cars, esp in PB, UTC, and near the border.)

Don't forget about North County too!  We're a little further, but the gorgeous beaches, landscapes, bars, food, yoga studios, golf courses, the Carlsbad Forum, Carlsbad Outlets, and many distinct neighborhoods make it pretty cool!  The downside is the trek to Downtown, the airport, and the traffic is outrageous on the 5.  Just a friendly reminder...

I love every part of SD...welcome home!
