Alright I freaking heart Magic and Mason and this is why: Mason gives a rockin hair cut and a great head massage...I seriously almost had to smoke a ciggy afterwords.,..and I don't smoke! and Magic gives you a courtesy call the day before your appt. and makes you feel hella welcome when you walk in the door and not the press on nails fake welcome...you know what I mean. they offer you coffee and other bevvies, I walked in not really sure what I even wanted done to my hair...I knew I needed the blonde fried bits gone and that I wanted some hair in my face to cover the ol' wrinkles and somehow he figured it out! (he is very patient) so I'm in the chair ..(Mason & Magic have been together for like 18 years) she goes to leave & he stops what he was doing ( just for a second) to open the door for her! Dude Stuff like that seriously melts me.

Just as described... The people were awesome, (I would totally hang out with them!) the place was friendly and inviting (Full of laughter and fun!) and the cut was perfect for me. I will be back! (Oh, and Magic's iced coffee was the bomb!)

That was me breathing a sign of relief for FINALLY FINDING A NEW SALON.
My wonderful stylist relocated to So Cal a couple of years ago and I've been salon bouncing for all that time, getting mostly bad cuts, and worrying that there was only one person on this planet capable of cutting my hair. I can't tell you how many times I've walked out of salons feeling downright ugly in the past couple of years.
When I went to see Mason, though, I finally walked out feeling sassy and cute again.
The ambiance is so great...if you are a laid back, down to earth kinda person, you will like it here. There is art and the decore is hella rad, without making you feel like you aren't good enough to be there. It's just not pretentious at all, in any way, which is totally NOT how most salons are in the area now.
Here is the one thing that you probably can't garner from the reviews so far.. Mason isn't some GQ'd out gay guy who does fabulous hair. He may or may not offer you a Coors (so he says). He actually is a total old skool punk lookin dude, with bleached hair of his own(which, I think, had a hint of green when I saw him), who just happens to be really good at cutting hair. We had a great conversation about music. He's not what I expected but is freaking awesome at his job.
When I got home from my hair cut, my husband said I looked hot. That's the ultimate test of a haircut for me. If my husband notices enough to compliment it, it must be good.
I'm so happy I found a new salon. :)

Best fing salon in sac. I have been going to magic salon for a while and have had nothing but amazing experinces with them. The first time i went in they spent the whole night taking my hair from dark brown to blonde and didnt try to rush the process one bit. Mason is absolutely amazing and has done great color as well as cuts on my hair. and magic is as sweet as it gets, she makes me laugh so hard every time i come in. Not only is the talent there but also they actually care about you. What other salon will let you pass out in the chair with a hangover and not give you shit for it but instead he joked with me about his hangover stories. i love you guys, your all amazing and i will be coming in soon. -ashley

Yay for Magic Salon! I have not found anywhere or anyone good since I left San Francisco! I have very curly hair . Most of the time people will cut it like a triangle..terrible. I went to see Michelle. She made me curly hair look amazing! best hair cut I have ever had and she taught me how to style it quickly and it looked great...woo hoo for Magic Salon!
Mason is the man. In five minutes, he took my suggestions, showed me a few pics in a magazine, and then presto - he was on his way to giving me a quality cut.
I'm not sure what exactly it was, but I was never as nervous as I usually am when I go to a brand new place to get a haircut. He is very chill and better yet, pretty damn talented. None of the chainsaw-massacre-like approaches with clippers here...instead, he worked like Edward Scissorhands for a solid twenty minutes to give me the cut I wanted. All in all, I ended up with a cut that looked better and better with each passing day and I never regretted going here.
It's just too bad that I can't talk myself into putting this much change into every cut, mainly b/c my hair grows faster than weeds and I need to get it cut literally every 2.5-3 weeks. That being said, if I win the lottery, or finish my training (whichever comes first), I'll be sure to dedicate my winnings to the Magic Salon, a very worthy cause indeed.

I was tempted to hold back a review of Magic Salon for fear of having Mason innundated with customers, but I feel like for the good of the community I have to concur with every other 5 star rating. Mason is wonderful and he has given me newfound trust in stylists other than the one I had been going to for the past 10+ years.
The salon is much more hipster, punk-rock than you'd think. It's a little hard to find, but it's on the intersection of 12th and Franklin. While Mason owns the place, he rents space to all the other stylists - so don't assume that you can just pick any person to cut your hair. Hair color seems to be their forte here, but I loved my hair cut and it was super affordable.
Also, they have free espresso drinks - what more could you ask for?? Thank you Mason for an awesome haircut!!

This place is an answer to my prayers. I have very curly hair and it is hard to find someone who can cut it correctly. Mason did a wonderful job and I would recommend him to all.

I was a little apprehensive about trying Magic Salon, despite the great reviews, because it did seem to cater to the punk-rock set based on the pictures posted here and on myspace, and that's not exactly my look. But I went ahead and scheduled an appt with Amber, and I'm SOO glad I did. I went in with just a description of what I wanted, no picture, and came out with the haircut (and highlights) I've been trying to get for years. Just in case it was a fluke, I waited until after my second visit to review, but it wasn't -- the next haircut was just as good. Nay, great. Nay, supremely awesome. I have never been happier with my head!
Before Magic I was going to another highly rated salon in town, and I was pretty happy, but now I am ecstatic. Better style for much less money -- who can argue with that?

Well I finally got this yelp thing all together, so it's about time I write my long over due review of Magic Salon. I have horrible almost unmanigable wanna be curly frizzy hair, thats always a pain in the @$$!!! I've been to salon after salon and I never leave happy. Until I found Magic Salon that is. Mason is absolutely AMAZING, and Magic is a sweet and aweome receptionist!!! It's got great decor, music and the best atmosphere. It's totally affordable and they run even better monthly specials!!!!! I'll never go to another salon!!! I always leave with my hair feeling soft and looking GREAT!!! I can't wait to go back, everyone with hair should check this place out!!!!!

Where to begin? Magic Salon is the best little secret in Sacramento. Forget about all those uptight salons in Midtown or the cookie-cutter ones in the suburbs. If you are looking for talented stylists in a way chill atmosphere this is the place to be. I recommend booking an appointment with Michelle. She has been doing my hair for over a year and always gets it right. She executes cut and color with precision and always gives me something exciting and up to date. Oh, and did I mention, she is the Curl Whisperer. If you just have not yet found someone that can tame those wild curls, she will change your world. Between the casual vibe, the great music and the friendliest staff in town, this little gem shines!

I got my hair done at Magic Salon by Mason a week ago and I just now got time to write a review (though not that much time, so I must be brief).
I went in with long, black, somewhat damaged hair and emerged several hours later with short, light red, somewhat less damaged hair. The cut is beautiful, the color is wonderful, and all of my hair is still in my head, not fried off.
Mason is a true artist, and fun to hang out with. Magic is charming and funny and makes the time pass quickly.
I'm a cheap fucker and my new hair was worth every penny!

i got my hair cut here a few weeks ago-and it still looks good. Mason did a great job-and, unlike other salons I have been to, I was not burdened with pointless chatter about American Idol. They were very helpful when I had to reschedule and just very nice. Mason is very talented, and gave me something that looks way more stylish and fun than the awful hack job I had before.
It's a bit out of the way for me(and easy to miss if you've never been) but I will definitely go again.

I got a cut and color touch-up from Mason a few weeks ago. He did a great job with my curly hair. I'm quite impressed by the time and thought he put into the cut. My hair now has a great shape.
I enjoyed the atmosphere in the salon. Mellow and friendly. The vibe is warm and I think everyone, from Harley bikers to corporate types, would feel comfortable.

Finding a place for mens haircut is hard these days especially difficult heads like mines. Usually I go to the cheap haircut down the street. So I decided to walk-in at magic based on reviews. The place was very charming and laid-back. Mason was busy so I had Ericka cut my hair. You know what, she gave me a nice cut. I say nice because I have difficult midlength hair. She took her time and made all the right cuts to achieve my style. Put it this way, no more supercuts for me. Price well with 20 for easy and 35 for difficult midlength hair like mines.

I was 7 minutes late to my appt. I felt so stupid for driving by this place three times before I found it. But I was SO glad I did! I've been hearing such rave reviews from beautified friends that have gone in and gotten transformed here. I'm scissor-phobic, being the product of a hairstylist mother myself, I'm always a little nervous when I go to sit down to get my hair did....
...BUT I want to thank Erika for taking real good care of me! I even brought her a picture (yeah, I'm one of THOSE people) and she gave me suggestions, had really fun techniques to give my hair edge, used innovative cutting techniques and was overall, a perfect hairapist! I tell ya, couldn't help feeling a little bit cooler walking out of there, and the winning combination, when I got home, my teenage son said "Cool haircut Mom!" Score!
While I was there, I also overheard Mason consulting a woman, who shared a horrifying story, that I'm sure we've all experienced before, where a stylist kind of goes Zamboni on your hair when you're trying to grow it out, and telling her how she should wear her hair instead of listening to what she wanted. Mason consoled her, listened intently, and advised, and that woman, also walked away a very happy customer! She looked great too!
And when Magic told me how much the haircut/shampoo/set was...I was like WHAT? That's so cheap....I know I'll be back!

You knock down someone's rating, someone who has worked his ass off to learn his trade and start his own business, over something so arbitrary? Ridiculous!
I've had Mason cut my hair for years now. He's cut my hair in his basement, at a salon in Oak Park, at Alley Cuts and now at Magic Salon. Mason can do any style. He worked hard to learn how to cut EVERY type of hair. He can give great advice and help you figure out what you want to do with your hair. And he'll cut it how you want it, even if you go in and ask for a foo-foo haircut on your head, as I've done many times. This guy is the real deal. Service, style, artistry and he is a great guy as well.
The salon is the coolest. Hang out with Magic, have an espresso, read MAD magazine and you'll end up wanting to hang out even after the cuttin' is done.
Maybe they'll build a proper website soon. I could really care less.

I have been getting my hair cut by Mason for almost 5 years.
I'm was elated when he and Magic finally got a Salon. This Salon is the most laid back, and dare I say cool, that I have ever been to.
Mason is unique amongst stylists in that he just makes you look good, and that's it.....No matter how you want your hair done, even if you have a picture of exactly how you want to look, Mason makes you look better! I swear! And not in that "let it grow out a coupla days" bullshit either! You leave the place looking 115% better than when you entered.
Magic is sweet as hell, and always has a crack about something to make me giggle.....Sometimes I just go by to hang out, even if I don't have an appointment.........did I mention they even have espresso while you wait? Oh, and MAD magazine! Show me one other Salon in town that has MAD magazine....I mean damn!
This place is truly one of a kind, and it lives up to it's name.

It's a simple, spacey salon and I just needed to trim off less than two inches of hair. My stylist was Ericka and she was very very nice and kind and not fake. I wish I had more hair for her to work with because it seems like the stylists at this salon can really create, from reading other people's reviews.
$35 for shampoo (I didn't get shampooed), cut, and dry.

I followed the reviews on Yelp and went to have a cut last week. And I'm very very pleased with the result.
I asked Mason for a very short pixie cut, and it turned out perfect, just the right length. It's not an easy cut, and I have to say, this is one of the best I've had.
Price is a steal for Sacramento.

I just got a full head color and a bonded weave and I must say that I LOVE it! Mason did my color and my extensions and he did a fantastic job! The girl at the front desk named Magic is awesome. She has provided me the best customer service I have ever received. I found this place here on yelp and so I messaged them on their myspace since I'm more of a computer girl than a phone girl. Magic responded to me right away answering all the questions I had asked in my e-mail. She also send me pictures of samples of the work the did. After communicating through e-mails I decided to schedule a consultation since it seemed like it was worth my time. When I got there Mason was ready on time. Magic greeted me once I stepped through the door and was ready to answer any questions I may have had. Today was my birthday and I couldn't have spent it any other way. They are truly an amazing team!

Mason has cut my hair about four times now and I am always happy with the results. I usually end up hanging out for a good hour afterward chatting with Magic and Mason. The place has a super laid back atmosphere so it doesn't feel like a quick in and out production line salon. I don't even tell him what I want, I trust his skill and judgment. They can do everything from a plain basic haircut to wild styles and color. Overall a great place to have your hair done. And cool people to talk about music and art with!

Mason has been doing my hair for about 5 (?) years now and, no matter what length or condition my hair is in, he has never let me down. Whether I go in knowing exactly what I want, or I have no clue and just let him do what he wants, Mason always comes through with a super-cute 'do. I recommend him to everyone I know... and many that I don't.
Not only is Mason an amazingly talented artist (and a SUPER-nice guy), the atmosphere of the salon is AWESOME. Nice, laid back environment. Not all stuffy, snobby and uncomfortable like many salons I've been to. Not only can you get a great haircut and/or dyejob, you can get an espresso fix and listen to good music while you're at it!
And that receptionist... WHOO! She is smokin' hot!

I am always so happy with my hair when I leave Magic Salon. My daughter used to complain about my hair style until I started going to Mason's, (the main hair stylist at Magic Salon). He managed to make my hair stylish enough to appease my daughter and easy enough for me to manage on a day to day basis without alot of work. In our book Magic Salon is the best salon in town.

I'm totally biased, after all... it got named after me, but this place is awesome! Not your typical "salony" salon, not stuffy , or pretentious. Fun, funky, down to earth. Mild to wild! i had to re-do this review seeing as how the first one was way too short. this salon is the only one i will go to as long as they remain open. the prices are extremely reasonable and the services are fantastic. i get my hair cut/colored here as well as eyelash extensions. magic and mason are extremely friendly and make your visit as comfortable as possible. you can get some espresso, and if you're really lucky, can watch kung fu hustle as your color is setting in. if you want to support local businesses owned by fantastic folks, then this is the place to be. they carry some great product lines also. oh, and they have a subscription to mad magazine. great stuff all around.

Magic Salon is fantastic! I found them on Yelp and after reviewing all the great feedback decided to give the salon a try. I called for an appointment and was fit in the following day. My hair has always been such a pain, never holding any style I try to put it in. But, Mason gave me an amazing cut and told me exactly how I could maintain the look myself. I love my hair now!
The people are really friendly and the prices are great. I definitely give Magic Salon an A+!

I haven't felt very "hip" since I had my baby, so I decided to cheat on my "stylist" of 9 years.
What a difference an appointment at Magic can make!

Mason totally listened to what I wanted and made me a layered red head.
Sometimes a little care and pampering goes a long way. I love this place! Magic is always down to Google something random and I have added some no beats to the ipod after a sample of the eclectic music that just adds to the funky and fab atmosphere.
If you want cool "I saw it in a magazine/music video" hair or just a trim, Magic Salon is true to it's namesake.

I went there for the first time the other day and Aloha cut my hair. I wanted something unique and edgy and I had something specific in mind but couldn't find a good photo as a reference. I did my best to explain what I wanted and just trusted her to do it with m weird, curly hair.....and it turned out fantastic!!! I love my cut! It's really different and edgy but also looks really good and actually works with curly hair!
I highly reccommend this place. The atmosphere is really relaxed, everyone's really nice and the prices are really low.
So, I have now lived in Sacramento for 3 years and finally I have a great salon in Magic Salon!
I have tried a number of salons in mid/downtown and the frilly atmosphere really gets on my nerves (and high prices for not-so-good haircuts!), so when I saw the reviews on Magic Salon on Yelp, I decided to try them today when an appt somewhere else got canceled. I got a last minute appt with Michelle who was really nice and did an AWESOME job with my thin straight hair (I have a very hard time getting people to cut my thin, yet bountious hair!). She was very patient with me in getting the cut that I wanted (two rounds of, "can we take off a little more length") and she obviously knows what she is doing.
I have to say I was a little nervous going in because I'm a 40 year old not so trendy gal .... looking for a good hair cut, but no pink stripes (yet), and I was worried that the salon might be a little too "hip" for me, based on the web site. The salon does have a hip feel, but as another reviewer stated, it's also more casual than some of the stuffy mid, downtown and East Sac Places. Also much better music!!!! (bluesy tunes on the sound system while I was there). And best of all, a GREAT haircut for a reasonable price ... and from what what I read on Mason, and from talking to Michelle, I'm sure this salon can get as hip as you desire for those wanting to go beyond the basic cut. To get all this in a nice, welcoming place is great (Mason seems very nice also).
The extra added benefit of this salon for me is that, since I live in Tahoe Park (South of 50 on the other side of Oak Park) I didn't have to venture across the freeway to the parking madness of mid/downtown. I enjoy supporting businesses that are growing on this side of 50.
Anyway - A+ on this one! High, high recommendations! From what I understand, this salon is a new (March 2007) venture for Mason, so get in there and get a great cut, color, or whatever, and support this great new salon! I already made my December appointment ...

Never in all my days, and the constantly "on the fence" person that i am, have I ever walked away completely satisfied from a salon, barber shop, back ally, whatever. But, once I let Mason do my hair, not only was I happy once, but everytime since he's tamed my coif. I highly reccommend this salon. If you can't go for your hair, feel free to just get waxed, or some eye las extension, and enjoy the fresh espresso the receptionist makes just for you.
